Repairs to Marine Drive Link Bridge over FW De Klerk Boulevard commences

The City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate hereby advises residents, road users, businesses and the broader public of repairs to the Marine Drive Link Bridge over the FW de Klerk Boulevard in Woodstock. The work will start this evening, Monday, 7 October 2024, and continue until Friday, 11 October 2024, between 19:00 and 05:00, provided there are no unforeseen delays. There will be a partial lane closure on both inbound and outbound lanes on the FW de Klerk Boulevard (N1) and Marine Drive Link Bridge (R27) for the full duration of the project.

‘The repairs to the Marine Drive Link bridge will improve the lifespan, safety and operational standards of the bridge. This will assist with helping heavy duty vehicles and other public vehicles to continue crossing the bridge safely. The work areas will be demarcated at night, after the peak period, to regulate traffic flow through the affected area. As such, the partial lane closure will be effective between 19:00 and 05:00. Although the repairs are scheduled to take place at night, congestion can still be expected since traffic travelling in both directions will be affected. I’m encouraging road users to use alternative routes while construction work is under way, or otherwise, to factor in additional travelling time,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The repair work includes the following:

Application of a protective coating to existing parapets
Reinstatement of asphaltic plug type expansion joint
New lane marking on the R27 Marine Drive Link Bridge

‘The repair work will assist us in keeping Cape Town moving for decades to come. The benefits of the work will improve road safety conditions and riding quality, as well as decreased vehicle user costs,’ said Councillor Quintas.

The City recommends all to be cautious while work is under way, lower their speed and be vigilant in and around the work area. Only one lane will be open to traffic in each direction, while work is happening at night.
